Southeast Guilford Community Association Meeting Minutes

April 9, 2009 7:00 PM  Alamance Presbyterian Church

Action items are bolded

Attendees:  Tom Ammeter, Joe Andrews, Lonnie Baxley, Harold Garrett, David Gearhart, Jean King,  Denise Osborne,  Dan Rogers, Darin Thomas, Rosemarie Williams

Visitors: Kip Johnson

Dave Gearhart called the meeting to order.  The minutes from the March 12 meeting were read and approved.

There was discussion about SEGCA name badges.  Kip agree to redesign the badges and make some new ones.

Rosemarie reported that the treasury has approximately $1900.

Joe Andrews reported for the Grant Writing Committee (includes Sue and Nanette) who is applying for a grant up to $3,000.  The committee will be meeting again to prepare the application.  They will be attending a May 6 workshop for those who are applying for the grant.  Harold suggested that Joe contact Congressman Howard Coble or his local office

Jean King reported for the Marketing Committee.  The group is still working on an article for the Discover, a triad publication.  Local businesses will be encouraged to advertising.  Denise reported that Southeast Lifestyles will be adding business briefs in the next edition.  They will also be featuring SEGCA in an article and an advertisement.

Dave reported that Sandy Weathersby has created a website www.thegreeneatwoodymill.com .

There was discussion about the increase in traffic that the two centers will likely generate.

Dan reported on the Commercial Development Standards Committee.  The group is working on a description of work for a possible summer intern.   There was a discussion about use survey monkey for determining what businesses the area would like to see located in our business district.

Dave reported that he met with Elaine Stover from Greenschemes.  They proposed that we do a one day (6 hour) workshop to determine what the community wants in terms of businesses and other amenities.  The Board will meet with Elaine to determine if this is needed.  There was concern as to whether enough people would participate.  There was also a concern that we would not get the best cross section of opinions.  The price might be $3000 or more.  Lonnie commented on the “heart of triad” meeting where some people were anti-growth.  Greenschemes was very adept at handling this type of group.  The Board will take up this matter in the next meeting.

It was reported that Dick Mearns presented to the Transportation Advisory Committee chaired by Robbie Perkins.  The SEGCA offer their appreciation to Dick for a fantastic job.  Harold has reported that the walking trail around Alamance ballpark has not been completed.  Since the ball season is starting soon, it is not clear when it will be completed.

Dave thanked the membership for the serious efforts that the committees are undertaking.  The work of SEGCA is being accomplished within these committees.

Dick talked to Mark Kirstner, a PART planner, who wants to create a survey about transportation.  Dave reported that PART is considering a new route that may include Liberty, Forest Oaks, Pleasant Garden, and other parts of the county.  Dick is also collaborating with Mark on school transportation.
