Minutes from October 10, 2013 Advisory Board Meeting at Alamance Presbyterian Church

 

Attendees:  Tom Ammeter, Bill Thomas, Bob Chamberlain, Anne Hice, Denise Osborne, Mike Johnston, Dan Rogers, Jean King, Jeffrey Knotts, Aaron Harris, Lonnie Baxley, Barbara & Harold Garrett, David Michaels, Linda Welborn,  Alan Branson

Visitors:  Steve Cline, Mark Beckwith, Eddie Souther

 

The entire group introduced themselves.  Tom thanked Denise for her service as President for the past 2 years.

Jeffrey Knotts read the minutes from the last meeting when new officers were elected.  The minutes were approved.

Treasurer Report: Mike Johnston reported $1,474.72 in the checking account.

Linda reported the new George Simkins Elementary School in SEGC is under construction and will open August 2014.  Options 1, 5 or 8 will be used to select a new attendance zone.    Linda discussed the funding priorities.  SEHS is seeking funding for a possible band room addition.  There was some discussion of naming the SEHS baseball field for Kevin Callahan. She also discussed the tablets that have pulled back because of durability and overheating problems.

 

Dan reported on the meeting with Deno Adkins and two staff members from Cone Healthcare.  There was good discussion about the existing doctors in SEGC and why Cone might want to open a clinic with emergency services in the Forest Oaks Community.   Deno agreed to further research how they might want to proceed and meet with SEGCA again in January.

 

Dan reported on our request with the City of Greensboro to amend the new Water and Sewer Policy.  We are asking that our economic development on Liberty Road be considered as Tier 1.  Even though there have been several emails  to Deputy City Manager David Parish after we met on 7-22-2013, they have not yet given us a final answer to our request.

 

Ann reported on open space committee.   There will be a meeting on 10/28 at the Pleasant Garden Fire Department to get citizen ideas for the 250 acre tract on Company Mill Road. There has been a $10,000 grant awarded for initial planning and trail creation.  Mike agreed to publicize this event to our Facebook page.

 

Bob and Alan talked about improvements at Hagan-Stone.  They have received $500,000 and will be spent on making the area handicapped accessible, new blacktop roads, walking paths and sidewalks.  Camp Joy will be upgraded, too.  NC Wildlife has agreed to rebuild the pier at one of the lakes.  Alan discussed the GC Parks long term plan includes a list of capital improvements over the next 7 years.  Support from the community at the Commissioners meeting

Aaron reported on the US-421 signs for SEHS, Forest Oaks and Hagan-Stone Park.

 

Lonnie reported on the 2nd Annual Livable Communities Summit which can be found triadsustainability.org.  Bill and Jean agreed to lead the effort to plan a Christmas dinner for SEGCA.  The group felt this event would replace our normal meeting.  December 6 and 13 were discussed as possible dates.

 

Denise asked for volunteers for Saturday at funfest.  Ann announced a new restaurant will be opening in PG.

 

Meeting was adjourned.               Next meeting on November 14 at 7 PM at Alamance Presbyterian Church.
