Southeast Guilford Community Association Advisory Meeting Minutes 1/9/2014
Minutes from 11-14-2013, 2013 Advisory Board Meeting at Alamance Presbyterian Church
Attendees: Anne Hice, Mike Johnston, Dan Rogers, Jean King, Aaron Harris, Lonnie Baxley, David Michaels, Linda Welborn, Terry Lambert
Visitors: Steve Cline, Brian Newell, Terry Ward and Rob and Karen Fulkerson (paid dues after meeting)
Mike called the meeting to order. The entire group introduced themselves. Minutes were read, amended and approved. Mike Johnston reported $1,474.72 in the checking account. Membership dues from Terri Lambert have been received. Treasure’s report was approved.
Dick reported for the open space committee. A plan is being developed by Jesse Daye using the initial grant of $10k received from the GC Health Dept. A meeting was held in PG to gather citizen input. Dick reported a summary of citizens’ input. In the future there will be bike lanes in SEGC as envisioned in the MPO bike pedestrian plan. Jesse will lead a meeting in April to present citizen input and the proposed plan. There are 14 preserves in GC. AmeriCorp may have some interest in helping with building trails. Terry Ward agreed AmeriCorp volunteers could camp at Hagan Stone Park for free.
Dan and Linda reported on the School Forum on Tuesday at SEHS. The group lobbied hard to defeat option 5 which would remove Lynwood Lakes from the Alamance Elementary school district. Linda suggested that we show up at the next meeting at Eastern to present to other GC School Board members who were not present at the recent forum at SEHS. Linda favors option 9 but she has not yet finalized her decision. Linda reported that 6.8 MM has been allocated by the GC School Board for a new performing arts containing 9500 sq ft and other projects at SEHS. The other projects include a concessions stand, bathrooms at the concessions stand, an 8 lane track, and a baseball field house and others. Complete details are contained in the October 24 minutes from the GC BOE.
Terry reported about the $500k +/-park grant recently received. Many handicapped projects are included. Improvements to Camp Joy include new bathrooms. The marina will be turned into a picnic shelter. The projects should all be done in 2013.
Dan and Terri briefly discussed the idea of a new sign in front of SEHS.
David discussed fundraising for SEGCA. We did a joint effort last year with the SEHS Jazz Band. Dave asked for ideas.
Jean reported that December 14th meeting will be Isabella’s at Forest Oaks. The price is $25/plate and the price includes one of three entrée choices. Cheese and cocktails will begin at 6 PM. Dinner to be served at 7 PM. RSVP by 12/8/2013 .
Jean reported on the Reality Store at SEHS to be held on November 26th, Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Need volunteers.
Aaron reported that he will graduate from the GC Citizen’s Academy very soon.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM. Next meeting: January 9th at 7 PM at Alamance Presbyterian Church.
